Melvin Dennis “Denny” Woods, 79, of Thornport/Newark, passed away August 2, 2018, at his home following a sudden illness. Per his request no services or visitation will be held. He was born May 12, 1939, in Columbus, the son of Otto Woods and Vera (Kirkman) Woods. He attended Newark High School where he played in the band. He retired in 1993, as a Sargent with the Newark Police Department. He also worked for Roper Corporation. He was a member of the FOP Lodge in Newark, Am-Vets, Eagles and Moose Lodges. He made an annual trip to Key West, Florida, for the Ernest Hemingway Look-A-Like Contest. After winning the contest in 2001, he was asked to serve as a judge each year. He loved living at Buckeye Lake, enjoyed boating and had many friends. Denny is survived by one daughter: Carrie Woods of Heath; one half-sister: Phyllis Campbell of Texas; his ex-wife and mother of his daughter: Diana Woods of Millersport and two step-children: Marcy Hopkins and Mia Mitchell. In addition to his parents, Denny was preceded in death by one half-sister: Nancy Woods. A Celebration of Life Service was held Monday, at Papa Boos on Buckeye Lake.
