Mary B. Smythe

January 6, 1922 - January 23, 2019

Mary B. Smythe, 97 of Zanesville, died at 9:05 p.m., Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at Adams Lane Care Center following a lengthy illness. She was born Friday, January 6, 1922 in Zanesville, the daughter of John and Mary (Euman) Hanifan. She married Paul K. “Kenny” Smythe on Tuesday, April 17, 1973. She was previously married to Marion H. Mercer who was killed in action during WWII. Mary was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. Mary worked many years for AT&T in Columbus and at Terry’s Tavern. She was a member of the American Legion Aux. Post 29 and the VFW Aux. Post 1058. She was a kind, caring person who lit up a room whenever she walked in. She loved to dance to any kind of music and did any time she could. She loved gardening and working with her flowers at her home on Ball St. every Spring and Summer. She crocheted many afghans and they can still be found in the homes of numerous family members. Mary is survived by her daughter, Donna Jean (Jim) Earhart of San Francisco and son Joseph (Connie) Rudisell of the Philippines; granddaughter, Katharine (John) Batcheller and grandson Rob (Gregoire Galperine) Earhart and great- grandsons, Jack & Brett Batcheller. Also surviving are sisters Helen Mercer, Julia Ginikos, Jo Davis and Velma (Dan) Linscott all of Zanesville and June (George) Carr of Defiance and nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Kenny Smythe who died May 4, 1994 and Marion Mercer who died November 24, 1943, siblings; John T. Hanifan, Albert S. Hanifan, Suzann E. Hanifan, Frank Hanifan and infant David Hanifan. Also brothers-in-law: Don Mercer, Markos Ginikos and Darrell Davis Family and friends may call from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 29, 2019 at the Hillis, Combs and Nestor Funeral Home, 935 Forest, Zanesville. Funeral Mass will follow at 11:30 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 144 N. Fifth Street, Zanesville with Fr. Thomas Kumau as celebrant.
